Introducción

La estructura del primer condicional se usa para hablar de posibilidad en el futuro - algo que ocurrirá o no en el futuro dependiendo del cumplimiento de determinadas condiciones.

Ejemplos Si esto sucede ...  

"If they win the match,	I will buy them dinner."
If this happens ...	... this will happen.	... entonces va a suceder esto,
Si esto no sucede ...	... entonces no sucederá esto.

"If you study hard,

you will pass the exam."

"If she sings well,

she will win the competition."

Form

A first conditional sentence contains two clauses: the "if" clause and the main clause.

To make the "if" clause, we use:
"if" + present tense.

To make the main clause, we use:
future tense. Las frases de primer condicional contienen dos cláusulas: la cláusula "if" y cláusula principal .

Para formar la cláusula "if", se usa:
"if" + presente de indicativo.

Para formar la oración principal, se usa:
el futuro.

La cláusula "if" se puede usar en primer o segundo lugar. El significado es exactamente el mismo:

• If they are late, we will leave without them.
• We will leave without them if they are late.

Cuando se usa la cláusula con "if" en primer lugar, se pone una coma entre las cláusulas.

Se puede usar "when" en lugar de "if":

• "if" implies possibility
• "when" implies that it is certain. "If" implica posibilidad, mientras que
• "when" implica una mayor certeza.

Por ejemplo:

• If I get home late, we won’t have dinner.
• When I get home, we’ll have dinner.

Aspecto lingüistico de nivel intermedio

Se puede usar "unless" en lugar de "if".

"Unless" significa "a no ser que=except if" ó "if + not".

• "You won't be promoted unless you complete the project on time."
• "Unless you pay the fine, the police will take your car."

Las dos frases siguientes tienen el mismo significado:

• "If you don't read the book, you can't review it."
• "Unless you read the book, you can't review it."
