Introdução

Usamos advérbios relativos para descrever a intensidade (extensão ou quantidade) de um adjetivo, advérbio ou verbo.

Podemos usar "not" para formar uma negativa com alguns advérbios relativos.

Exemplos

• Para um grau excessivo:
  • Com um adjetivo:
    • "The book is too long."
    • "The book is not too long."
  • com um advérbio:
    • "She spoke too loudly."
    • "She didn't speak too loudly."
  • Com um verbo:
    • ("too" com um verbo significa "as well" ou "also" e não é um advérbio relativo. "He played the piano too.")
  
  
• Para o grau máximo:
  • Com um adjetivo:
    • "Their styles of painting are completely different."
    • "Their styles of painting are not completely different."
  • com um advérbio:
    • (Nós não usamos "completely" com advérbios
  • Com um verbo:
    • "They completely finished the meal."

Formato - positiva

Costumamos colocar o advérbio relativo antes do adjetivo, advérbio ou verbo principal (após verbos auxiliares), mas em alguns casos ele aparece depois como mostra a tabela:

Formato - negativo

Se usarmos "not" com um advérbio relativo, o significado negativo é para o advérbio relativo e não necessariamente descreve o oposto do adjetivo, advérbio ou do verbo que descreve:

• "The book is not very long."
  Isso não significa necessariamente que o livro seja curto; isso significa que o livro não é muito comprido para uma intensidade alta(pode ser longo, muito longo, ou mesmo curto, dependendo do contexto ou do tom que utilizamos).

Com adjetivos, nós usamos "not" antes do advérbio relativo.

Com advérbios e verbos, nós usamos "not" no formato negativo do verbo.

Com verbos, podemos colocar o advérbio relativo antes do verbo principal e após verbos auxiliares, ou depois do verbo principal (ex. "She hasn't completely finished the meal." or "She hasn't finished the meal completely."):
