Introduction

"wish"

On peut utiliser "wish":

• pour exprimer une envie dans le futur de manière formelle ou polie:
  "I wish to attend the meeting."
• pour exprimer une envie dans le futur pour quelqu'un d'autre, généralement dans des expressions figées:
  "I wish him the best of luck."

"wish" / "if only"

On peut utiliser "wish" et "if only" pour exprimer une envie impossible ou improbable, ou un regret:

• avec le prétérit pour exprimer une envie impossible au présent:
  • "I wish I lived in the countryside."
  • "If only I lived in the countryside."
    Je n'habite pas à la campagne au moment présent donc cette envie est impossible.
  
  
• avec le plus-que-parfait (past perfect) pour exprimer un regret sur le passé:
  • "I wish I hadn't eaten the prawns."
  • "If only I hadn't eaten the prawns."
    Je regrette d'avoir mangé les crevettes dans le passé.
  
  
• avec would/could pour exprimer une envie considérée comme improbable ou impossible au moment présent:
  • "I wish he would save money."
  • "I wish he could save money."
  • "If only he would save money."
  • "If only he could save money."
    pas "I wish he will/can save money."
    Je ne pense pas qu'il soit capable d'économiser de l'argent, donc sa capacité d'économiser de l'argent au moment présent est une envie impossible .

Le mode subjonctif

Les expressions avec "wish" et "if only" sont des exemples du mode subjonctif, qui est utilisé pour exprimer des envies improbables ou impossibles (ou des recommandations, sans "wish" / "if only"). Au mode subjonctif, on utilise seulement "were" (pas "was"):

• avec le prétérit de "be":
  • "I wish he were on holiday."
  • "If only he were on holiday."
  • (pas "was here")
    Il n'est pas en vacances donc c'est une envie impossible au moment présent.
  
  
• avec le prétérit continu:
  • "I wish I were going on holiday."
  • "If only I were going on holiday."
  • (pas "was going")
    Je ne vais pas partir en vacances donc cette envie est impossible au moment présent ou dans le futur.

Propositions conditionnelles

On peut utiliser "wish" et "if only" pour décrire une condition imaginaire ou impossible au passé ou au présent, suivie par une proposition principale qui décrit le résultat imaginaire.

Structure du second conditionnel (lien vers la feuille de travail) pour des envies impossibles au présent:

• "If only I didn't have a headache, I would/could go to the party tonight."
• "I wish I didn't have a headache, then I would/could go to the party tonight."
  La situation réelle et le résultat: J'ai mal à la tête donc l'intention/la capacité d'aller à la fête est un résultat imaginaire.

Structure du troisième conditionnel (lien vers la feuille de travail):

• "If only I'd taken the train, I would have arrived at the destination by now."
• "I wish I'd taken the train; I would have arrived at the destination by now."
  La situation réelle et le résultat: Je n'ai pas pris le train et je ne suis pas arrivé à la destination donc ceci est un résultat imaginaire dans le passé.

Formation - "wish"

On utilise "wish" au présent simple pour exprimer une envie présente de faire quelque chose dans le futur.

• Pour exprimer une envie de manière formelle ou polie:
  sujet + "wish" + "to" + infinitif

Dans ce cas, on n'utilise pas "then" car la prévision / possibilité de l'heure d'arrivée se passe au même moment que le départ du train.
